INGREDIENTS: THE CRAFT BEHIND OUR COCOA
At Cup of Coa, we love inviting people into the story behind what they are sipping. Most of us grow up reading labels without ever learning what those ingredients actually do. The truth is, the science behind great cocoa is surprisingly simple and kind of wonderful.
Cup of Coa has always had the same recipe. It is made from a few carefully chosen ingredients that work together to create the creamy, melt-on-your-tongue experience you know and love.

Here is the ingredient label as it appears on every tin of Classic No. 1:
Sugar, Cream Powder - A Milk Derivative (Hydrogenated Coconut Oil, Corn Syrup Solids, Sodium Caseinate, Mono and Diglycerides, Dipotassium Phosphate, Sodium Silicoaluminate, Soy Lecithin), Sweet Whey Powder, Non-fat Milk Solids, Cocoa (Processed With Alkali), Carrageenan, Salt, Organic Cocoa Blend (Organic C ocoa, Organic Raw Cane Sugar, Organic Vanilla, Sea Salt). Contains Milk, Soy, Coconut.
It can look like a lot, especially in the parentheses. Here’s the thing: each set of parentheses is actually part of a single ingredient. For example, cream powder is one ingredient — all the words in parentheses are just the components the government requires us to list separately. The same goes for our organic cocoa blend: it’s one ingredient, but the parentheses break down the cocoa, raw cane sugar, vanilla, and sea salt that make up that blend. Nothing extra has been added — it’s just the way labels are required to be written.
Some of these names can seem long or intimidating, but here’s the simple truth: they are just the science behind the creaminess, texture, and stability of a truly luxurious cocoa.
Here’s what each ingredient does:
Sugar / Corn Syrup Solids
Our label lists corn syrup solids, which is a dehydrated form of sugar. This is not high-fructose corn syrup. It is simply sugar derived from corn, and it gives Cup of Coa its sweetness and body.
Cream Powder
This is where the “big words” come in. The cream powder combines dehydrated dairy with naturally derived emulsifiers and stabilizers: Hydrogenated Coconut Oil (this simply means the fat is solid at room temperature, not liquid — and coconut oil is not a seed oil), sodium caseinate, mono and diglycerides, dipotassium phosphate, sodium silicoaluminate, and soy lecithin. These ingredients work together to create a velvety, smooth texture that blends beautifully with just hot water.
Sweet Whey Powder & Non-fat Milk Solids
Milk derivatives that add richness, creaminess, and that familiar indulgent taste.
Cocoa (Processed With Alkali) & Organic Cocoa Blend
Deep, chocolatey flavor comes from cocoa. We use a blend of the finest types of cocoa to create Cup of Coa’s distinct flavor. This flavor is balanced with organic raw cane sugar, vanilla, and a touch of sea salt. All of our cocoa is sourced through the Cocoa Compass Program, which supports ethical and responsible practices in the supply chain.
Carrageenan & Salt
Carrageenan is an all-natural, food-grade ingredient made from organic sea kelp. It is widely used in creamy beverages and dairy alternatives to create smoothness and stability. Along with salt, it helps Cup of Coa stay perfectly balanced and velvety in your cup, giving the texture you expect from a truly indulgent cocoa.
Understanding what is in your cup is not meant to intimidate. It is meant to empower you. Whether you are at a dinner party, at home with a tin in hand, or a café considering carrying Cup of Coa, you can see exactly what goes into every cup and why.
Cup of Coa is meant to be a treat. We do not chase trends like sugar-free or protein-added. We do not cut corners. Every ingredient is there for a reason — to create a cocoa that tastes indulgent, nostalgic, and luxurious.
